Sushi - Wonderful and Fabulous

You must have noticed the recent trend of sushi restaurant growing all over the world, unless you are an inhabitant of the caves of Saskatchewan (Without any offense to anyone living in Saskatchewan , of course). The craze for the raw fishes is on a growth and has become a topic of enumerable reviews in restaurants and the uber-trendy "It" spots, thereby giving attention to the Japanese staple food. These raw things charge a pretty penny for everything, what with smart chic interiors, dim lighting and perplexingly designed square-shaped plates.

Sushi is not a big deal and even nothing special for the people living in the Far East. It is made an unremarkable phenomenon by its cultural staples of rice and fish. Surprisingly this concept of sushi can be traced back to the 7th century China where fishes were to be preserved for longer durations. Earlier the fishes were packed with salt just to ferment it within a few months, but no one would like to wait for months just to have a piece of salty fish.

The first ever sushi was served by Chef Yohei in the 1800s, when he actually served some fishes covered with rice as dinner to his friends. He had created two types of sushi then, naming them on two of the cities of Japan – Edo (now Tokyo) and Osaka. Similar to the present day sushi being served at a sushi restaurant were the ones from Osaka, for their decorative presentation of mixing rice with many ingredients specially fish. The advantage of a splendid diversity of sea food and fishes in their area was also taken by them in order to create nigrizushi. Since the time of Yohei the sushi chefs have traveled a long path, yet off late they use the same techniques and principles in making the rolls.

Sushi might be a topic of interest in you and you may have heard many a thing about it, but it may be very frightening to be going to a sushi restaurant without the prior knowledge of placing your order. Take a look at the menu to start with:

  • Nigri – A hillock of rice is made and a small piece of fish was placed on it, served sometimes with small band of nori or seaweed. A bit of wasabi is also placed in between the rice and the fish for added flavor in some restaurants.

  • Maki – It is the most identified forms of sushi, the components after being rolled inside rice and nori, are cut into small edible sizes.

  • Temaki – They are a cone-shaped hand roll that has an enclosure of a great deal of fish, which are wrapped up in a large piece of nori with the other ingredients. On account of its large character they are to eaten with the help of chopsticks rather than hands.

So you should get acutely addicted to this sushi which is highly nutritious and healthy, you may take a little practice in getting the rice and rolling right, but experience will enable you to make several nori rolls in minutes.
